The Greenwich Historical Society (GHS) sits at the intersection of preservation, education, and community engagement. As the organization expanded its programming, exhibitions, and public mission, it needed a digital presence that could evolve in step, respecting its historical authority while performing like a modern cultural institution.
Counterspace has partnered with GHS on an ongoing basis to continually refine and strengthen both its online ecosystem and its visual communications. The goal has been consistent: make history more accessible, increase engagement, and support the organization’s long-term growth through thoughtful, measurable design decisions.
The Challenge
GHS faced a familiar challenge for many cultural and nonprofit institutions:
- A growing volume of programs, events, and educational content
- Increasing expectations for website speed, clarity, and mobile usability
- The need to attract new audiences while continuing to serve long-time members and donors
- A desire for marketing materials that felt contemporary without losing historical gravitas
Critically, digital success needed to translate into real-world outcomes: higher attendance, stronger membership engagement, and increased visibility within and beyond the Greenwich community.
Our Approach
1. Continuous Digital Evolution
Rather than treating the website as a static redesign, we approached GHS’s digital presence as a living system. Through iterative UX improvements, content structure refinements, and ongoing performance optimization, the site has been able to grow alongside the organization.
Key areas of focus included:
- Clearer navigation paths for exhibitions, programs, and research resources
- Improved content hierarchy to surface high-value stories and events
- Mobile-first refinements to support on-the-go visitors and families
- Technical performance improvements to ensure fast load times and strong Core Web Vitals
This steady, methodical evolution has resulted in year-over-year traffic growth exceeding 100%, effectively doubling site usage as awareness and engagement increased.
2. Data-Driven Decisions
Analytics and real user behavior informed every major decision. We monitored how visitors discovered the site, where they engaged most deeply, and where friction appeared—then refined the experience accordingly. This ensured that growth wasn’t just raw traffic, but meaningful interaction with GHS content and offerings.
3. Integrated Brand & Marketing Design
In parallel with the digital work, Counterspace supports GHS across a range of print and marketing materials, ensuring visual and tonal consistency across touchpoints.
A recent example is the 2025 Annual Report, where we:
- Balanced historical artwork with a clean, contemporary layout
- Created a clear narrative structure highlighting programs, stewardship, and impact
- Designed spreads that feel accessible and engaging while maintaining institutional credibility
The annual report serves not just as a record of the year, but as a brand artifact, something that reinforces trust, professionalism, and mission alignment for members, donors, and partners.
