Digital book jacket design

Open Road Media was getting ready to publish the many works of William Styron. We needed to generate designs for the book covers that were reflective of the stories but also tied all the books together to create a relationship between the books by this talented author. Essentially, we needed to create a brand for the author. This was a critical launch for Open Road as one of their first digital series to be published. All eyes were on Open Road founder, Jane Friedman, a well known publisher in the industry, and we were honored to be a part of successful launch.

Our solution was to create a design system for the book title, author and tertiary information that allowed a central image to hint to the subject of the book. Each image was them pulled into a channel layer in photoshop in order to create the sepia appearance, unifying the varied images. A channel is a layer that utilizes a single color, this allows much more flexibility than simply converting an image to black and white or using a duotone.
